The 2020 vintage was a warm, sunny year with its fair share of cold rain. But what makes it most interesting is that, for the first time in Ornellaia’s history since 1985, all four grape varieties were picked at the same time – an unusual situation for an estate that grows the early-ripening Merlot and late-maturing Petit Verdot.

The wine itself also showcased perfectly balanced proportions in terms of its character. “All the grapes expressed themselves very well,” Axel commented. “Sometimes one variety takes the lead, but that was not the case in 2020; every grape plays a solid and important role.”

The vintage also marks the 15^th edition of the Vendemmia d’Artista project. This year, American conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth interprets the character of “La Proporzione” – which evokes the perfect balance between the sum and its parts – with a series of intellectually powerful works centred around the word “wine“.

One artistic label designed by Kosuth can be found in each case of six 750ml bottles of Ornellaia 2020, featuring a quotation on the concept of perfect proportions from Roman Architect Vitruvius – the man who inspired Leonardo da Vinci’s famous drawing, the Vitruvian Man!

2020 is a classic Ornellaia expected to age in the way great vintages do. Vibrant and well-structured, it arcs through the palate with dense yet elegant tannins, leading into a persistent finish and lingering freshness.
