Nicolas Catena Zapata
There are few more visually striking winery properties in the world than Catena Zapata. Lying at almost 5,000ft elevation, Catena Zapata is distinguished by its pyramid-like design based on the architecture of the Mayan civilisation, and it is often called as ‘South America’s Grand Cru’.
Widely regarded as Argentina’s First Grand Vin, Nicolas Catena Zapata became the first luxury cuvee from Argentina to be exported around the world. The cuvee is named after Nicolas Catena, the man who is known for his pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec, discovering high-altitude terroirs in Argentina and bringing its fine wines to the international stage.
Following a change that started in 2017, the 2018 vintage is a lot higher in Malbec than in other recent vintages – with more contained ripeness and more freshness that keeps some of the Cabernet character (tobacco, blackberries) and the floral notes from Malbec. The result is an intense wine that remains balanced with very fine tannins; a wine that is set to revive the original style of Bordeaux thanks to its massale selections of ungrafted vines. 2016 vintage available for purchase too!
Truly a wine with grand ambitions!
