Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape

“Clos des Papes remains one of the true reference point estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and is a safe buy in just about every vintage. I’ve yet to see the estate put a foot wrong, and even in more difficult vintages, they produce a beautiful, age-worthy wine.”
– Jeb Dunnuck
Dating back to 1896, founder of Clos des Papes, the first Paul Avril, was one of the key figures in establishing the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. Such was the estate’s stature!
What makes the wine of Clos des Papes so special are the grapes from 24 different parcels that contribute to the cuvee’s signature complexity. “Chateauneuf de Pape is a blend—a blend of grapes and a blend of the terroirs,” says Paul-Vincent Avril, “they all bring something important to the blend”.
The 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is “special stuff”, says Joe Czerwinski of Wine Advocate. Full-bodied yet weightless, silky and long, this complex wine exudes exotic notes of kirsch and Asian spices.
2021’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is equally “outstanding”, offering up scents of pineapple and tangerine, coupled with floral overtones.
