Wine rating is a score assigned by one or more wine critics to a wine tasted as a summary of evaluation of that wine.
The label tells it all – an auspicious encounter between France and Chile, Almaviva is the brainchild of the illustrious Rothschild and Chilean wine giant Concha y Toro. Chile offers its soil, its climate and its vineyards, while France contributes its winemaking savoir-faire and traditions. The best of both worlds, we would say!
Made from a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties, in which Cabernet Sauvignon predominates, Almaviva is an exceptionally elegant and complex wine. Its launch was a major milestone in the development of Chilean wines, offering the world a promise of pleasure and excellence.
Promises are meant to be kept – and Almaviva certainly did deliver its promise! The 2016 vintage was named in Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of 2019”, while the 2017 vintage was named as “Wine of the Decade” by James Suckling in 2020.
Chile’s 2018 harvest did not disappoint either, having been recognised for its exceptional quality, balance and complexity. Almaviva 2018 is a beautifully nuanced red with a complex aroma of tobacco, dried herbs, currants, some leather and rose petals too. Full-bodied and chewy, yet refined with great polish.
A wine well worth keeping for auspicious events ahead!
