BEST VALUE VINTAGE FOR CONSUMERS
“The vintage may be the best value in Bordeaux since 2008” says James Suckling, while Antonio Galloni has touted 2014 as “an ideal vintage for the consumer”. Now, let us dive into the specifics and tell you why!
A recent market update by Liv-Ex, a global wine trading platform, has shown that 2014 is the best-rated Bordeaux “off-vintage”. Compared with its 2017 peer, 2014 has a higher average quality score across all Bordeaux appellations! The only “time” when it was beaten is by none other than the two legendary pairs (2009 & 2010, 2015 & 2016).
If that is not enough statistical proof, the average price for the 2014 vintage is also 18% below that of 2017, making it the best value of all recent vintages!
Things were looking bleak after a gloomy summer in 2014. However, that turned around to a glorious Indian Summer that led to a great late harvest!
2014 is characterised by freshness and elegance – generally medium-bodied with expressive aromatics and fine, silky tannins. That said, the finest 2014s are not lacking in concentration or depth, but they will need time to be at their best. Wines not to be missed include those from Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau Cheval Blanc!
